Giuseppe d'Onofrio, MD

dOnofrio.jpg: Giuseppe d'Onofrio, MD graduated in Medicine and Surgery from Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart) in Rome, Italy and he completed his post-graduate specialization in Clinical and Laboratory Hematology and in Oncology. His entire academic career has been with the Hematology Department at Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. His academic positions include: Head of the Laboratory Hematology Unit, Associated Professor in Clinical Pathology and Immunohematology, and the Head of the Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion Service.

Dr. d'Onofrio is a teacher of the official course of Hematological Oncology and Laboratory Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine. He also teaches in the following Schools of Specialization: Hematology, Oncology, Clinical Pathology, Pediatrics, Radiotherapy, and is Teacher of Hematology and Immunohematology in the University School for Nurse Sciences. He organized and teaches the course of "Bone Marrow Cytomorphology," held every year since 1995.

Dr. d'Onofrio's main areas of research are morphology of blood cell disorders, bone marrow and progenitor cell transplant, automated blood cell analysis, quality control and standardization in hematology, myelodysplastic syndromes and hematologic abnormalities in AIDS. He is a member of many scientific associations, including the American Society of Hematology (ASH), the International Society of Hematology (ISH), and the International Society of Laboratory Hematology (ISLH).

Dr. d'Onofrio is a member of the International Council for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) Cytometry panel. He participated in the preparation of the joint NCCLS-ICSH "Methods for Reticulocyte Counting (flow cytometry and supravital dyes); Approved Guideline," Document (NCCLS H44-A). He is also a member of the Nomenclature Terminology and Units Committee of the International Society of Haematology and a founder and member of the Research Center for Development and Clinical Evaluation of Automated Methods in Hematology at Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome, Italy.
